Telecommunications giant LIME, the RJR Group of companies, Allied Insurance Brokers and GraceKennedy Limited lead the private sector support for the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) staged Fireworks on the Kingston Waterfront, which will be held on News Years Eve Friday, December 31, 2010.
Other private sector partners, Singer, RBTT and the Jamaica Biscuit Company join with Development Bank of Jamaica, National Housing Trust, Port Authority of Jamaica, and Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation to ensure the staging of what has become a calendar event.
The Fireworks on the Waterfront promises to be the usual exciting affair, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on December 31, culminating at midnight with the fireworks, and lasting through to 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, January with activities targeting the young and young at heart. This year, the popular stage show returns with a mix of popular, vintage and gospel artistes, including Etana, Richie Loops, Queen Ifrica, John Holt and a host of other entertainers. Persons wishing to view the activities from the best seat in the house can do so from the VIP Party, at the Poolside of the Oceana Building, 2-4 King Street.
Fireworks on the Waterfront is more than an entertainment event and underscores the Corporation’s commitment to facilitating the integration of the communities into the development plans for the capital city, as well as providing opportunities for economic development. In fact, each year, the event attracts scores of vendors and artisans who participate in the street activities. Additionally, young men from the area are trained and utilized as marshals who assist in ensuring the smooth flow of the event.
Fireworks on the Waterfront was first staged by the UDC in 1999 to usher in the new millennium and was intended to be a one-off event. However its absence the following year resulted in such a public outcry that the UDC has sought in subsequent years to stage the event.
