UDC Welcomes Private Sector Partnership for Fireworks on the Waterfront

Telecommunications provider Digicel and Scotiabank have partnered with the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to stage Fireworks on The Waterfront 2011. The event which aims to bring life into Downtown Kingston, will be held on the Kingston Waterfront on New Year’s Eve Saturday, December 31.

Scotiabank expressed an interest in the event because they thought it was an ideal opportunity to contribute to national development and to give back to the Jamaican people. Monique Todd, Vice President of Marketing Public & Corporate Affairs at Scotia Bank   said “Being a major corporate entity downtown it’s very important that we work with the UDC to celebrate yet another year in Jamaica and another year downtown as we look forward  to the redevelopment of downtown.”

Digicel is on board for the first time this year as major sponsor and is excited to help Jamaica ring in the New Year. Digicel Jamaica, Senior Sponsorship Manager, Shelly-Ann Curran said “Digicel is always finding new ways to connect with and delight our communities and bring our special brand of fun and vibrancy to the people. This, along with our commitment to spearheading the rejuvenation of downtown Kingston with our imminent move to our new global headquarters, meant that supporting Fireworks on the Waterfront is the perfect way to celebrate the dawn of the New Year. We are looking forward to a great night.”

The programme of activities will commence as usual at about 2:00 p.m. culminating at midnight with the fireworks, and go through to 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2012. As is customary, the event will be staged along Ocean Boulevard and includes a kiddies’ area with a variety of rides, entertainment and a VIP Poolside Party.

Other sponsors for the event this include, Jamaica Observer, RJR94FM, Hitz 92FM, Fame FM, Jamaica Information Service,  Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC), Jamaica Freight and Shipping, Port Authority, Thought To Finish and Allied Insurance Brokers Limited.

Fireworks on the Waterfront was first staged by the UDC in 1999 to usher in the new millennium and was intended to be a one-off event. However, due to overwhelming public demand the UDC has sought in subsequent years to stage the event.

Fireworks on the Waterfront fits into the overall development plans for Downtown Kingston. The redevelopment of Downtown is on in earnest and is being guided by the phased implementation of the Downtown Kingston and Port Royal Redevelopment Plan 2030.
