UDC leads Renovation of Harbour Street Craft Market, Montego Bay

As the nation’s main urban developer, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is providing project management expertise for the second phase of the rehabilitation of the Harbour Street Craft Market in Montego Bay.

In the role of project manager, the UDC carried out an assessment of the entire property; developed detailed structural, civil, electrical, mechanical and architectural working drawings; prepared detailed estimates of works in accordance with the detailed drawings; prepared tender documents and procured suitable contractors using the Government of Jamaica Procurement Guidelines. The UDC will also supervise, in collaboration with TPDCo, this second phase of the Market’s renovation.

Marshall Construction Company Limited will carry out the works required which will include the renovation of shops and bathroom facilities with respect to roofing, walls, repairs to doors and windows and overall painting; the upgrading of the existing drainage and soak-a-way system; renovating external works i.e. driveway, external lighting, and walkways; and upgrading of the existing perimeter fencing.

The contract is valued at $44 million with funding provided by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) with funds received through the Tourism Enhancement Fund which was established in 2005 as a mechanism for the collection of fees from incoming airline and cruise ship passengers to promote the development of the tourism sector.

The contract signing took place on May 26, 2014 at the offices of TPDCo. Signatories were Executive Director of TPDCo Dennis Hickey; TPDCo Director of Projects Wayne Robinson and Alphanso Reynolds, Managing Director of Marshall Construction Company Limited. UDC Deputy General Manager, Development Planning and Management Lorna Perkins witnessed the contract on behalf of the Corporation.

The work is scheduled to take place between April and September 2014.

The first phase of the renovation took place in 2009. At that time, TPDCo facilitated the renovation of 127 shops in the market, along with associated external works. The remaining section of the market has since deteriorated and is in need of urgent rehabilitation.

Harbour Street Craft Market is located at the centre of Montego Bay between Howard Cooke Boulevard to the west and Harbour Street at the east of the property.
