UDC/NEPA lead successful ICCD Cleanup at Hellshire Bay Beach

Garbage retrieved from the Hellshire Bay Beach on International Coastal Cleanup Day 2016 (September 17) project organized by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA). Some 1,089 volunteers from community groups, schools, government and non-governmental organizations collected a total of 273 bags of non-recyclable garbage weighing 1812.6kg, and 229 bags of recyclable garbage weighing 1145.1 kg from the site. Provisions were made for the removal of the garbage to appropriate dump sites, while the recyclable materials were sent to recycling centres. Data from the project will be compiled with those from other projects island wide and submitted to the Ocean Conservancy. Entrusted with responsibility for the Hellshire area, the UDC developed the Hellshire Environmental Management Programme, and manages and protects the area’s wildlife and rich natural environment in accordance with its guidelines.
