UDC to Implement Ocho Rios Promenade Project

The town of Ocho Rios in St Ann is set to enhance its bid to be the island’s prime tourist centre with the development of a promenade extending from the Ocho Rios Marina to the entry gate of the Ocho Rios Bay Beach by the Urban Development Corporation. This forms one component of a multi-billion dollar redevelopment programme slated for that area as announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness recently.  The UDC will be managing some of the works under that programme valued up to approximately $500 million in this year alone through funding sources such as the Tourism Enhancement Fund.

The Ocho Rios Promenade project is valued at JMD$133,741,729.00 million dollars and will begin in May 2017 lasting for four months. It will extend over 300 metres and will feature multi-coloured interlocking pavers, areas for seating and shopping kiosks.

Speaking during the first of a series of town hall meetings geared at communicating the government’s plans and policies in Ocho Rios the Prime Minister said it was the consensus that the town needed a facelift, a fact confirmed during recent dialogue with cruise ship industry players.

We are going to be…improving that promenade so that when the tourists come off the ship and they are walking around they feel the sense of pride that we take in our town,” Prime Minister Holness announced.

The upgrading works will be carried out as part of the Ocho Rios Improvement Project and will be completed along Turtle Walk (Phase 5B), Marina Entry to Ocho Rios Bay Beach. Funding for the project is being sourced from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF). It represents the sixth of 10 designated phases of the Ocho Rios Enhancement Project, geared toward enhancing the experience of visitors to the island.
