The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has invested in the educational development of twenty GSAT awardees through individual grants of $10,000. The awards were presented on August 31, 2017 at a function at the UDC’s Pearly Beach attraction in St. Ann.
The GSAT awardees are children of members of staff at the Corporation spanning its various entities in Kingston, St. Catherine, St. Ann and Westmoreland.
In speaking at the function, Dr Damian Graham, UDC General Manager encouraged the children to have the confidence to chase their dreams and to live their lives with excellence. “You will go through difficulties, you will go through struggles, but you have to be patient to allow yourself to endure those struggles,” he told them, using the analogy of a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.
Highlighting aspects of the UDC’s role in the achievement of Jamaica’s Vision 2030, Dr. Graham pointed out that the foundation was being laid for the environment which they would occupy as young professionals. “What you are being asked to do in taking your next step is to prepare yourself to give more and to come back and pay it forward,” he said as he encouraged loyalty to the national vision.
The UDC’s GSAT Awards is an annual function started in 2007 and has seen millions of dollars spent in facilitating the achievement of the educational ambitions of many young persons across the island some of whom are now employed while others are pursuing tertiary level education.
The UDC will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2018 marking five decades of making development happen in various sectors including the educational sector. Various upgrading projects have been successfully executed in providing thousands of schools places through the Northwestern Schools Programme, enhancement of sporting facilities at GC Foster College and provision of sanitation conveniences at early childhood institutions.
