UDC URGES SAFETY AND RESPONSIBILITY OVER HEROES’ DAY WEEKEND

-Jamaicans Encouraged to Enjoy Jamaica’s Attractions Safely

As Jamaicans prepare to celebrate the upcoming Heroes’ Day holiday, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is appealing to the public to put safety first as they travel, gather, and enjoy the island’s natural treasures over the long weekend.

With more people expected on the nation’s roads and at leisure destinations, the UDC is reminding everyone to exercise extra caution, both while travelling and during recreational activities. “We want this weekend to be one of joy and relaxation, not misfortune,” said Dena Chatrie, Director of Business Development at the UDC. “That means making good decisions, looking out for one another, and following all safety guidance so that everyone can return home safely.”

UDC-managed sites such as Harmony Beach Park, the World-Famous Dunn’s River Falls and Park, and Reach Falls are expected to see increased visitors, with Reach Falls hosting a special “Reach and Relax” experience on Friday, October 17, offering free entry, entertainment, and local cuisine as part of efforts to encourage Jamaicans to enjoy the country’s natural heritage.

While these spaces are designed to offer memorable experiences, the UDC is urging Jamaicans to remain vigilant. This includes observing lifeguard instructions, staying within designated swimming areas, supervising children closely, and avoiding risky behaviour such as excessive alcohol consumption near water. Jamaicans are also encouraged to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and take regular breaks to prevent fatigue or heat-related illnesses.

Road safety is another critical concern. With many Jamaicans travelling across the island, the UDC joins our national authorities in urging motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid speeding, and never drive under the influence. Pedestrians and cyclists are also reminded to remain alert and visible, particularly during early morning or evening hours.

The UDC thanks all patrons for cooperating with safety personnel and reminds the public that safety is a shared responsibility. By staying alert, following the rules, and looking out for one another, Jamaicans can ensure a peaceful, enjoyable, and incident-free holiday weekend.
