Kingston, Jamaica | December 31, 2025: The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is facilitating the distribution of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) toys to children in hurricane-affected communities as part of the Kiddies Villages at its Fireworks Celebrations in Western Jamaica.
The STEAM toys are being distributed at the following UDC Fireworks Celebrations locations: The Black River Courthouse, Black River, St. Elizabeth, Long Bay Football Field, Negril, Westmoreland and Harmony Beach Park, Montego Bay, St. James,
The initiative is being led by Dr. the Honourable Andrew Wheatley, Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Science, Technology and Special Projects in the Office of the Prime Minister, and forms part of a targeted recovery effort following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
Minister Wheatley noted that the initiative combines immediate relief with long-term value, converting holiday gift-giving into an opportunity to stimulate curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and resilience among children whose routines and learning environments were disrupted by the hurricane.
The programme is being delivered through agencies within the Science Portfolio, including the National Commission on Science and Technology, the National Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, the Scientific Research Council, and the Science Division, with support from National Youth Service volunteers to ensure efficient, child-friendly distribution.
The UDC Fireworks Festival 2025 is a national, multi-location celebration bringing Jamaicans together in safe, revitalised public spaces, showcasing urban centres as vibrant, inclusive and economically active. The theme for 2025 is Live, Love, Recovery.
